Gemini vs Siri vs Alexa for a grandparent: which assistant to set up
How to choose a voice assistant based on the devices your parent or grandparent already has, plus easy first commands.
The best assistant is usually the one built into a device your parent already uses. Here's a simple way to decide.
| If your parent has... | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| An iPhone or iPad | Siri | Built in; works across Apple devices (Apple: Use Siri) |
| An Android phone | Gemini / Google Assistant | Built into many Android phones |
| An Echo Show or Echo speaker | Alexa | Voice control for calls, reminders and the screen (Echo Show 8 listing) |
Easy first commands
- "Call Susan."
- "Remind me to take my pills at 8 a.m. every day."
- "What's the weather today?"
- "Set a timer for 20 minutes."
- "Play Frank Sinatra."
- Alexa on an Echo Show: "Show the front door" (if a compatible camera is connected).
Things to set up for them
- Contacts with nicknames ("Mom," "Doctor Lee") so calling by voice works.
- Volume up and a slower speaking rate if available (Amazon lists an adjustable speaking rate for Echo Show).
- Turn off voice purchasing on Alexa, or require a code, so nothing gets bought by accident.
Privacy, briefly
All three send some requests to the company's servers. Each has an official privacy page explaining what's kept and how to delete it:
- Apple: Ask Siri, Dictation & Privacy
- Google: Gemini Apps Privacy Hub
- Alexa: the Alexa Privacy Hub, linked from Amazon's Echo listing
A safety reminder
Voice assistants can be wrong, especially with health questions. And no real assistant will ever call your parent asking for money.
